In May, WDAS members helped at two daytime events at the Dark Sky Facility at Danby Lodge. The first, on 4 May, marked the Lodge’s 50th anniversary as a NYMNP centre. As part of the celebrations, the facility was open for the public to explore. John McCue, Mark Dawson and Paul Wood were there to show visitors around, including the telescopes, although observing was not possible. The grounds were busy throughout the day, and interest in the facility was high.

Paul and Mark also supported the wildlife Bio-Blitz Day on 26 May. As the event focused on wildlife, Paul used Stellarium on the large monitor to highlight constellations linked to animals and other living creatures, while Mark showed visitors the telescope room. Interest was steady throughout the day.

We anticipate more summer dates when WDAS members are likely to staff the observatory at Danby Lodge and show visitors the telescopes and facilities.

As for future star events, the light evenings will make public sessions difficult, so mid to late July is likely to be our next realistic opportunity. That said, if the weather cooperates during the Venus–Jupiter conjunction, we may hold a late event on West Cliff, starting at about 10 pm. The forecast is not especially promising at present, but Mark will keep a watchful eye and let relevant members know.
