A special date indeed, December 21st, the Winter Solstice, a date long noted on the calendar, but in antiquity celebrated as a turning point in the agricultural calendar, when daylight would get no shorter and offer hope to all. Today, the significance is much overlooked, just another day in the run up to yet another significant event - Christmas, the origin of which undoubtedly has roots in the earlier pagan celebration. What better excuse then to celebrate all this in the company of fellow society members; including this year, Andi, back from Tenerife for Solstice, Christmas and New Year festivities.

Everyone made it safely to the Hare and Hounds, although matters could have been made so much more tricky, but fortunately the December cold snap which saw everyone skating about ended a few days prior as a one day 'heat wave' melted away the treacherous icy conditions underfoot.

Thirteen society members and partners attended this year, Elaine and Phil were unable to make it this time, but otherwise those who attended in 2021 were again present. The biggest losers appeared to be the Post Office as a small avalanche of Christmas cards were distributed, with the usual ensuing kerfuffle. Food was then brought forth. Starters came and went, crackers were pulled (jokes and paper hats only - no mini screwdriver sets this year) followed by main courses and finally puddings and desserts, all delicious, with mostly empty plates going back. As usual Keith and John L managed to capture the spirit of the occasion on camera. After much discussion and conversation (and by then a near deserted pub) we said our goodbyes and departed into the night under starry skies, our pagan celebration over for another 365 sunsets!
